A Twist of Fate, or Just Plain Lucky?

It seems that everyone has a story about a close call, or an exceptionally fortuitous occasion. At what point do we stop calling these circumstances “luck” and label them “fate”? With the idea of a predetermined destiny, one would usually have to accept a certain amount of influence from some kind of higher power. Is it possible that a deity has the ability to manipulate any particular situation in order to follow a greater plan?

I recently met with a man who seemed to have a little bit of both luck and fate on his side. He has had several instances in his life that have, to a certain extent, left him wondering these very same questions.

His stories began during his career as a debt collector. He was trying to contact a debtor regarding her vehicle. When he called to speak with her, her number was disconnected. He decided to contact her neighbors, to see if they had any idea how he could get in touch with her. One of the neighbors told him that she, the debtor, had moved to Florida and worked for a specific department store. On a whim, he took a wild stab in the dark and contacted the named department store branch in Miami, as this was the only city that came to his mind.

As luck would have it, the very woman he had been trying to contact answered the phone. Of all the different cities in Florida, and all of the different branches of that particular department store, and all of the hundreds of employees that worked in this branch, she was the one to pick up the receiver. Of course she was not pleased to hear what he had to say regarding her vehicle, and the conversation was curtly cut short. The end result however, was that he was able to reclaim the vehicle, and get his job done. He recalls that it was very peculiar how everything he did just seemed to work out in his favor.

Though this single incident may not seem like much now, I would like to reiterate the principal of the butterfly effect. Everything we do, from the mundane to the life-changing, has an impact on the world around us. Who is to say that she would not have gotten into a fatal collision in that vehicle on her way home? All we can do at this point is speculate and wonder. However, with everything that he had going against him in this endeavor, was it fated that he would succeed?

The next event to take place for this gentleman, happened around twenty years ago. He was in Hayward driving his boss’ vehicle. It was a big, white Chrysler, and fairly new at the time. It was a clear day. Who would have thought that day one would need their windshield wipers? All of a sudden, as he was driving across the San Mateo Bridge, the sky opened up and it started raining buckets. He couldn’t see anything. He didn’t know how to turn on the wipers, so he pulled over on the right side of the bridge. A tow truck pulled up behind him, he supposed in order to stop other vehicles from hitting him. Once he finally figured out how to turn the wipers on, and could safely see out of the windshield, he started pulling forward. The tow truck pulled around him and went on ahead. When he got to the other end of the bridge, there had been an accident moments before. Three or four vehicles were involved in the accident. To this day, he believes that if he had not pulled over he could have been in that accident. Had he not been in such an unfamiliar vehicle, things could have turned out quite unfortunately for him.

Another situation presented itself to my acquaintance some five years after that rainy day in San Mateo, which made him question the boundaries between luck and fate. He was riding in a car with his boss, a different one the owner of the lucky Chrysler, heading east on the 580 freeway. They were on their way to handle some business in Sacramento. They were going east just on the other side of the 680 freeway. They were traveling in the fast lane, going pretty fast. He explained to me that the memory is rather faded in his mind, but that it seemed was a dark day, maybe even raining a little.

All of a sudden he got a funny feeling and felt really uncomfortable traveling that fast. He asked his boss to slow down and pull over a lane. His boss pulled into the middle lane, and almost immediately they witnessed a car maybe five or so car lengths behind them come speeding up on their right. The driver of the other vehicle proceeded to pull in front of them, and then cross into the fast lane where it collided into the center divider and spun around. The vehicle finally came to rest in the exact location their vehicle would have been at that same moment.

The experience left both of the gentlemen in the car very shaken. Now as he looks back my acquaintance can recall how strong the impulse to get out of that lane and into a safer position was. Could he have tapped into some suppressed sixth sense? Were there other forces at work that subliminally commanded he get out of that situation? Or was it just sheer dumb luck?

I am sure if you asked his family, consisting of many children and many more grandchildren; they would all say that it was something special that kept their father or grandfather in their lives. Happily, he has lived to see the births of his grandchildren and now lives a calm life in retirement.

It is amazing how all of the little things we do in our lives build up to something monumental. Some of us, it seems, are destined for good fortune. It could be that we make our own luck. Or it may be that destiny simply already has its mind made up for us. Whether it is all just a chance roll of circumstances or predetermined fate we may never know. It could be that paranormal forces have been at work in all of our lives at some point or another. But one thing is for certain, it is everyone’s destiny to find out eventually. Good luck.

More from Tiffany Ensign Gonzales - Diva of Premonitions:
I don't know why I forgot to tell you in the interview but when my son was 11 months old he had just started walking and I took him over to a friend's house. My friend happened to have a pool and I had a bad feeling something was going to happen, well I was doing my friend's hair for her wedding and there was other people there to help me watch my son while I was busy. Someone had left the sliding glass door open to the back yard and my gut instinct told me to find Indio(my son) and as soon as I turned my head I saw my son fall into the pool, so I ran outside and dove into the pool and got him out. Thank GOD I got there in time because he was just fine. He wasn't crying or anything, but I was balling my eyes out. Sorry we couldn't use that in the interview. Have a great weekend. ~Tiffany~
From Paul: Great story and a story that had a happy ending. We may have not used this in the interview, but we sure in heck can use it in this article!

Sharon K. Victor and the Owl:
Sharon tells me an interesting story. For 3 years now, a Barn Owl with white breasted feathers and tan coat has been following her around. The owl will actually tap on her bedroom window in her home in West Sacramento. The owl will go away for 3 months and come back and let her know he is around. Sharon will talk to the owl and the owl will just sit there watching and listening. Could this owl have a psychic connection to Sharon? Could this owl also be her protector?
