Interview with Ceri Clark, Publisher/Editor of All Destiny Magazine

*Question: Please tell us something personal about yourself. Your family
life, where you were born and raised. Some of the places you have traveled
to. Your hobbies, your recreational activities, etc.*
*Answer:* I was born and raised in a small village on the West Coast of
Wales in the UK. I was brought up on ghost tales and legends from Wales’
past where Kings, Queens and magic ruled the roost.
At the age of 17, I moved to Birmingham and then to Wolverhampton to do a
degree in European Cultural Studies with Italian Studies. I loved the
course, full of history, philosophy and literature. From there I joined a
cruise ship as an administrator so I could travel while being paid. After
the cruise ship I temped for a while but then landed a job in a Patent
Agency in the information department. It was there that I qualified as a
Librarian. I’m not saying I was bored there but I needed some kind of
creative outlet and in 2002 I created All Destiny.com.
*Question: Ceri, how did you get involved in writing, editing and
publishing?*
*Answer:* I wrote little articles for All Destiny for a few years, then in
2005, I created the full magazine on the back of a short story competition I
set up and an article sent in from T Stokes. The first issue was very short
– but I think it had the best short story. Then again it would be - it won
the competition! Dean Warner seemed to know exactly what I was looking for.
After that first issue, it snowballed and I was sent quite a few articles. I
felt honour bound to carry on the Magazine. I got a few regular contributors
and the rest is history.
*Question: When was the first All Destiny Magazine published?*
*Answer:* 2005 as a formatted downloadable magazine but in January 2011 I
decided to change direction and put them up for sale on Amazon.
*Question: I think you have mentioned that the British Library keeps all
copies of All Destiny Magazine, is that true?*
*Answer:* When I created the first ‘proper’ magazine I registered an ISSN –
an identifier for magazines as opposed to ISBN which all books have, (can
you tell I’m a Librarian?) I then submitted the magazines to the British
Library. Like the more famous British Museum, they have a building in
London, (which was described as a ‘monstrous carbuncle’ by Prince Charles!)
but most of the books are held in the north of England. Publishers and
distributors (in the UK) are required by law to deposit one copy of their
publication to the British Library within one month of publication. I
occasionally forget and get warning letters from them – they have all the
copies up to now though!
*Question: How can someone order All Destiny Magazine?*
*Answer*: At the moment, all the issues are available from the Amazon
website for Kindles or Kindle apps (i.e. iphones/iPads/android
phones/tablets/PC/Mac) but I put a couple of issues on Smashwords because
they sell versions as PDFs, epubs etc and I am looking into other
distribution channels.
*Question: How can someone contact you? Do you have a website address?*
*Answer:* Through the website is the best way. The address is:

*Question: Fun question. If you had 6 dinner guests, 3 fictional, 3
historical, who would they be and why?*
*Answer:* With my cooking? Not sure they would survive! Hmmm, Doctor Who
would be my first choice. I’ve loved that show my entire life and he would
have lots of stories. Eric from True Blood, he’s not only a brilliant
character in the Sookie Stackhouse books but he’s really dreamy in the TV
shows. The final fictional character would have to be the Librarian from
Terry Pratchett’s Disc World series, ook!
Historical figures I think is more difficult. I think Boudicca would be
interesting. She was an amazingly strong woman for her time and for that
reason I would also choose Lucretia Borgia. It may be alleged that she was a
poisoner and murderess but you have to admire someone who survived those
days with such flair! My final guest would have to be female to balance out
the genders. I think the last place goes to Jane Austen, for writing Emma. I
am an incurable romantic.
*Question: What TV shows, movies, books do you like?*
*Answer:* I love sci-fi but I also like the occasional ‘improving’ show. I’m
watching Faulks on Fiction on the BBC at the moment and I’m really enjoying
it.
*Question: What are your future plans in writing, editing and publishing?*
*Answer:* I would like to do a sequel to my young adult novel, Children of
the Elementi, a tale of magic and illusion. I left it pretty open at the
end. I enjoy writing fantasy and I also started another one set during the
Roman occupation of Britain.
I’m also creating a series of guides called, ‘A Simpler Guide to’. So far I
have written ‘A Simpler Guide to Gmail’, available on Amazon. As a librarian
I’ve created guides for years and sometimes I find other guides, well, hard
going so I thought I’d make my own.

*Question: What is your favorite song?*
*Answer:* Always by Bon Jovi and I’m ready by Bryan Adams – I told you I was
an incurable romantic.
*Question: Thank you for this fantastic interview. Do you have any words
of wisdom for your readers?*
*Answer:* As they say in *Galaxy Quest*, never give up, never surrender. J
