Dracula untold is a breath-taking cinematic film based on the character Vlad the Impaler. Dracula is played by the actor Luke Evans. The movie starts out before Dracula becomes Dracula. Vlad is visited by a man that he was raised as a brother with, Mehmed played by Dominic Cooper. A brief story is mentioned of Vlad’s childhood with this person outlining especially that it was a horrible, violent upbringing. The visit is not just a visit though, Mehmed has come on behalf of his father who requires 1000 boy soldiers for his army.Vlad and his wife Mirena, played by Sarah Gadon are unwilling to make this sacrifice.

The movie is a stunning display of imagery, vampire fashion and gothic décor. The castle and all of it’s inhabitants are richly dressed in fabrics like velvet, chainmail metals and leathers. Vlad’s armor has a red dragon that is so beautiful carved into it. The castle and landscape are gorgeous examples of the past. There is one scene in particular where Vlad climbs a mountain to reach a cave and his red velvet cape plays brightly in the wind and stands out in the green and grey mountainous landscape.

Vlad tries to save his people by climbing this mountain to reach a legendary cursed vampire living inside. This is an original creation of the film makers as this is a new storyline straying from Bram Stoker’s Dracula as well as it never having to do with the history of Vlad the Impaler. He seeks out the monster inside to gain strength to defeat Mehmed’s armies.

After Vlad receives the power he is told that he has three days to resist the temptation of blood or he will forever stay a vampire. The movie keeps the traditional vampire superstitions alive- the burning of silver and the sun, stakes through the heart and the fangs. Vlad’s wife, Mirena is a Christian woman who is always wearing crosses. When she discovers what he has done she is disappointed because of her religious beliefs but at the same time she is happy because he is doing it to save their son and their people.

In the end, Mirena is the one that sacrifices herself for her people.
Vlad’s plans to save his kingdom succeed although he did not resist the blood and he is forever a vampire. He is depicted as a sensitive, romantic and kind person in this movie so if you are looking for the real Vlad the Impaler you wont find him here. His son becomes king and all works well for the kingdom.

During the movie there was a lot of reaction from the crowd. There was clapping and cheering. I thought when the movie was over that it should have been longer. It did not seem like it was very long to me. The end features a twist to the storyline that has to do with reincarnation and our everyday world. Dracula untold is a movie for the vampire and romance fan.

I give Dracula Untold five ghosties out of five because of the detailed costuming, historical scenery and unique perception on a traditional tale.
