THE BACKYARD FIRE
I was about 8 years old and lived in Monterey with my parents. On one particular day, my parents took off for the day and my big brother Andy was going to babysit me, but he ran off to see his girlfriend and I was left alone in the house. I went to the backyard and was playing with matches. One match that was still lit, I flicked away from me and it fell on some pine needles and before I knew it, the pine needles caught on fire. I ran to get the hose and when I turned around, the pine tree was on fire, then 3 pine trees were on fire. The fire truck came to my house and hosed down the pine trees and stopped the fire. My parents did not know what happened, until 3 days later and my dad was looking out the back sliding door and says..."Rose (my mom's name), our pine trees must have caught on fire, how could this have happened?? (Then there was some hesitation) and dad says....."Dale??" Dale is my middle name and they would call me by my middle name. I knew I was in trouble. About a week later, my dad took me to the County Fair and the mascot Smoky the Bear was at the fair and dad made me confess to Smoky the Bear on how I set 3 pine trees in the backyard on fire. I learned my lesson. Later in life, I became a firefighter for the California Division of Forestry which is now known as CALFire.

UNCLE MANUEL "MANNY" AYALA
My uncle Manny was a lifetime CHP (California Highway Patrol) motorcycle cop. One of the stories that he told us is that one time, he pulled over a Volkswagon van that was weaving on the road and gave the driver a ticket. The driver with a van full of hippies was headed to Los Angeles. One day Manny is watching the news and saw that they arrested a man that was leading a cult at Spahn Ranch. Manny recognized the cult leader, it was the man he gave a ticket to in the VW van, it was Charles Manson.

PIRATES: JEAN LAFITTE & BARTHOLOMEW "BLACK BART" ROBERTS
Here is a strange one. On my mother's side, we are related to the Lafitte family. My mother says that we are related to the French pirate Jean Lafitte. On my dad's side, it is rumored that we are related to Bartholomew "Black Bart" Roberts, another pirate, this time of Welsh descent. So it looks like piracy runs in our blood. Special Note: I have an employee named Sally Howard and her family is also related to the pirate Jean Lafitte. Sally may be my cousin.

THE SHADOW BURGLAR
At my Monterey home, I was age 9. On one night, I was watering the front yard and the front garage door was open and the back door to the garage was open. It was dusk and as I reached the open front garage door, I noticed a shadow figure standing at the open back door. I ran to the front door and pounded on the door screaming help! My parents opened the door and I told them I saw a man at the back garage door. My dad grabbed a big stick and investigated and couldn't find anyone. The police came and couldn't find anyone either and to this day, thinking about this incident, I feel I actually saw my own shadow and freaked out.

THE HALLOWEEN SLAP
When I was a little boy in Fresno, CA, I went trick or treating with 2 friends and as I got to this one home, I looked at the old lady and said..."I am the devil, ha..ha..ha..ha!" She looked at me and yelled..."I am a Christian" and slapped my face! I never wore that devil costume again, plus she refused to give me any candy. Another Halloween night in Fresno, off Effy Street, 3 teenage boys ran up to me and snagged my bag of candy. I ran home crying and my dad walked me down the street and told me to identify the 3 teenage boys. I did just that and my dad went up to the boys and the boys were intimidated and gave me back my bag of candy. They were scared.

THE GIRL'S BATHROOM SLAP
When I was in the 4th grade, a girl who liked me invited me into the girl's bathroom.  As I was talking to the girl in the girl's bathroom, my teacher Mrs. Sorensen came walking in and saw me.  She was furious and asked what I was doing in the girl's bathroom?  I didn't have a straight answer and she slapped my face.

PULL DOWN THE PANTS
When I was going to Del Monte Elementary School, there was a tall girl named Melanie and she would have her hair rolled up in a huge bun like Marge Simpson of the Simpsons cartoon.  I would constantly tease her and said....."one day a bird will build a nest in your hair!"  One day, when I said that, it was the last straw for her, she chased me down with 5 other girls and cornered me against a fence and all 5 girls pulled my pants down.  She looked at me and said..."if you ever say that again, this will happen to you again, but next time we will keep your pants!"  All of the girls started laughing.

THE STAB IN THE LEG
In grade school, there was a girl named Susan McCormick that had a crush on me and she would chase me everywhere on the playground.  I complained to the teacher and the teacher told me that she had a crush on me.  I didn't like Susan and she would sit in front of me in class and one day I pulled her pony tail and she did a back hand stab with a pencil into my knee, causing my knee to bleed.  To this day, I still have the broken pencil lead inside my knee.  I never pulled her pony tail again.
