When I went with my family to London, England; Edinburgh, Scotland; Stonehenge; Bath, England and finally Cardiff, Wales, there was one more stop I had to make. I have heard stories that Craig y Nos Castle is considered one of the most haunted castles in the British Isles due to its rich and spooky history. Here are some reasons why Craig y Nos Castle is legendary:
A very popular ghost at this castle is Adelina Patti. Adelina was a famous 19th-century opera singer. Many people have seen her spirit roaming around in various rooms, or down hallways. Her spirit has also been seen by many visitors at the theater where she once performed. Valerie Walters a tourist claims that when she utilized a bathroom at the castle, Adelina Patti appeared and asked Valerie if she could hold her hairbrush. Adelina smiled and then faded away. Ann Langer and Mark Morris, tourists from Connecticut, visited the castle and learned that the castle in the early 20th century was a tuberculosis hospital. Their tour guide explained to them that many of the patients suffered in a horrific manner, before taking their last breath. Ann Langer, a psychic saw an apparition materialize. The apparition was a skinny woman lying in bed and she was coughing up blood. Her partner Mark Morris did not see the apparition, but makes claim that he heard a horrifying coughing. Many ghost hunting groups visit this castle and obtain EVPs at many parts of the castle. Ghost hunters make claim that they see apparitions, objects move, and one ghost hunter saw a chair move across the floor. Certain parts of the castle hacking and coughing is heard. Moaning and even screams are heard. Helen Cheryl Day, a paranormal investigator believes these are the patients that fell victim to tuberculosis. Jodie Bearden from Mannheim, Germany has heard the disembodied laughter of ghostly children in the Children's Ward.
Paranormal Investigators and tourists that go on the ghost tour of the castle have witnessed and documented various unexplained phenomena, such as strange noises, apparitions, and sudden drops in temperature. A tourist witnessed a mop seemingly moving on its own, which was caught on video. More sightings of Adelina Patti have taken place in the theater basement where disembodied footsteps are also heard, and people seeing moving shadows. The Wicked One (an evil spirit) is said to hide out in the Salt Cellar. This area includes the Butler’s pantry and the slab room where Adelina Patti’s body was embalmed. The Wicked One is known to leave scratch marks on visitors to the Salt Cellar. Wicked laughter is sometimes heard. A hideous face will sometimes appear out of nowhere. The Wicked One is the scariest entity in this castle. Many paranormal investigators believe The Wicked One is a demonic entity.
John Mellon’s Room: This room is known for the tragic story of John Mellon, and visitors have reported feeling a strong presence and experiencing unexplained phenomena such as knocking on the walls, small objects moving on their own. A paranormal investigator named Lonnie says that he heard a disembodied male voice say..."I can see you". The story goes that a gentleman called "John Mellon" was believed to have hung himself in 1874 over the love of an employee at the time named Charlotte. This story originated from Paul Sandbach, a psychic medium who worked alongside a ghost hunting group from Liverpool called 'Ghosthaunted'. The John Mellon story has never been historically verified. When I visited this castle, there were some parts of the castle that felt thick with depression. In one room, everything felt gloomy and dispiriting. Not only did I feel this, but my son Jason felt it and his mother Patricia felt it. I believe we were all feeling the suffering that tuberculosis victims were feeling inside this castle hospital.
