Burlesque Performances Come to Citrus Heights: The Fire Escape Bar & Grill!
By Paul Dale Roberts, President of Jazma Online! www.jazmaonline.com

Lizzy D. Vine invited me to watch her burlesque show this evening. Why not? The date is November 7, 2010, Saturday and I am headed over to The Fire Escape Bar & Grill on 7431 Madison Avenue, Citrus Heights, CA. The bar and grill is right on the corner of Madison and San Juan. This is my first time ever going to this bar and grill and yet, I felt like I was right at home. The bar is filled with a large group of friendly people. The lady bartender is smiling and moving quickly while she serves all of the patrons their favorite beverages. The bar has very unusual décor, all kinds of odds and ends plastered on the walls and ceiling. A lady patron says that this bar is like ‘Cheers’, everyone knows your name. I have to agree with her. I never been to this bar, but yet I felt like I was at home as I ran into HPI Paranormal Investigator Leslie DeSoto and 2010 Vampire Ball partygoer Lauren DeCosta. In fact Leslie and Lauren are also my Facebook friends. As I surveyed this bar, most all of the women in this bar were sporting 50s style hairdos. Lauren tried to explain to me that their inspiration comes from some famous burlesque celebrity. I didn’t catch what Lauren said, but I see that it is catching on and it looks pretty hot!

Now through Lizzy, I am going to meet some new friends, I will meet her team of burlesque dancers. I interviewed each one and I must admit Lizzy D. Vine is definitely bringing sexy back and that reminds me of Justin Timberlake’s song, Sexy Back, which can be heard here:

Now let’s meet Lizzy’s Burlesque Team:

Ruby Champagne has been doing burlesque for 4 years. She was always a big fan of burlesque. While she lived in New York, she discovered that New York is filled with burlesque shows and she became very intrigued with the culture. She has played the House of Blues in Hollywood; Whiskey A-Go Go in Hollywood. She has been a pin-up model for Old School Rod. She won Miss Viva La Vegas a burlesque competition, she was selected #1 for this category. She is known for the Mexican Spitfire Burlesque. As I observed her show, she definitely has a Latin style to her burlesque. She will soon be in Alt Magazine. She is a very spectacular lady. www.rubychampagne.com Email: missrubychampagne@yahoo.com

Watching Lizzy D. Vine organize this event was like watching the Flash run a sprint from San Francisco to Los Angeles. Lizzy was all over the place, making sure everything was in order. She is definitely a great organizer. Okay, let’s get back to the interviews. Next!

Tasty Temptress from Santa Cruz. Tasty was introduced to burlesque through a friend. She started researching out what burlesque is all about and took the bite. She started taking classes and before she knew it mastered the art. She has performed at the DNA Lounge in San Francisco. In fact November 19th, 2010, she will be performing again at the DNA Lounge. The theme of this burlesque show at the DNA Lounge is ‘secret agent’. She has also performed at the Elbow Room. If Tasty is not performing burlesque, she is busy making cakes. If you have a celebration coming up, check out her cakes at: Cakes by Jocelyn (Specialty and Wedding Cakes and Desserts) – jocjac@hotmail.com or 831 206-0937.

Violet Streak has been doing burlesque since May. She got into burlesque and considers it as a celebration of women’s bodies. She is a mom and once had post partum depression. She found out that burlesque brought her out of this depression. She has performed at the Elbow Room in San Francisco and Uptown in Oakland.

Let’s take a break from the interviews and let’s talk about the performances. The crowd went wild as they saw these burlesque performances. Chairs were being used as props. Boas were swathing in erotic movement, high heels were being kicked off, nylons were methodically and slowly being taken off. The hostess Stephanie Hyden entices the audience with descriptions of what they will see and throws in her cute one liners, like…”what do you call kids raised in a brothel? Answer: brothel sprouts.” The dancing is provocative as feathers cover certain areas and later allow the reveal. Ruby Champagne has a Zoot Suit style in the beginning, polished off with some Salsa and Samba. Lady Monster of ladymonster.com sets her fire tassels on fire and the crowd screams!

Talking of Lady Monster, let’s see what she has to say.

Lady Monster – Queen of the Fire Tassels performs her shows with hard rock. She is a fast mover and she goes with the beat. She has performed at the Fat-Bottom Revue in San Francisco. She first got her start in burlesque in 2005. She learned the fire tassels from legendary burlesque performer Satan’s Angel in 2008. She has never burned herself. She was born and raised in Ohio and lived in San Francisco for 9 years. Lady Monster has many titles: burlesque, actress, model, writer, producer, radio DJ, recording artist, etc. She can be contacted at: stephanie@ladymonster.com Lady Monster has worked with: Leonard Nimoy, Margaret Cho, Satan’s Angel, Annie Sprinkle, Carol Queen, April Flores, Jello Biafra, Al Jourgensen, The Melvins and many more! Vivi Ennui lives in Seattle and got into burlesque in 2005. She became attracted to burlesque, because women of all sizes can become burlesque dancers and they dance with class. Vivi says burlesque is a ‘class act’. Vivi has performed in San Francisco, Oakland, Reno and of course Sacramento. She will be performing in the East Coast soon. She hopes to one day perform at the Slipper Room on New York. When Vivi is not doing burlesque, she is a professional photographer with Fractured Frame Photography. Vivi told me that she met Lizzy at the Birthday Suit Burlesque Show last June and now Lizzy has created the Blazing Burlesque Show that performs on a monthly basis.

The professional photographer for the Blazing Burlesque Show is Jamie Hughes http://jetnjme.blogspot.com

I have never been to a true burlesque show and I was very impressed! I see now what all of the hoopla was when Gypsy Rose Lee was alive!
