Question: Tell us something about yourself. Your hobbies, your recreational activities, your family life, schools you went to. Your favorite movies, TV shows and books.

Answer: wow… I guess the most important of these, is that I have had a lot of life change in the past few years. I have 3-4 very close friends for many years, and I'm very close to my family (mom, dad, two brothers), but they recently left California for Ohio? missing them a lot. I'm generally single (perpetually so, but not always by choice).

I worked in the video game industry, love/hate job… and book publishing, and I'm now working as a graphic artist (Communication Specialist II).

I have a BA in Fine Art from CSUSacramento. I grew up here in California, I did live elsewhere when I was young, including Guam - my dad was stationed in Thailand during Vietnam.

I love art, painting, I do a lot of volunteer work, and I have newer hobbies - Astronomy, yoga, meditation. I've kind of had a "self discovery" phase this last 2 years, and a lot has changed in my life.

Ask me about it, and I'll let you know more. I'm very open, honest and open minded generally.

I'm an artist before almost anything… it's what was important to me, and kind of consumes my life sometimes. I volunteer a lot, and love giving back when I can.

Question: You are an exceptional artist. How did you learn how to draw?

Answer: The same way we all do, Crayons in Kindergarten. My mom remembers that I was never very interested in drawing as a child, but we did a lot of art, finger painting, and I did a lot of "paint by number" sets, and sculpture, ceramics… I think the most important aspect to an artists' background is just Exposure to so many types of art, and continued exposure to art. I won my first drawing contest in 6th grade with a pencil drawing of a Harlequin Great Dane. My biggest influence came in High School, my art teacher, Mr. Stoneking at Foothill High School, got me drawing people. I was in love with Duran Duran, and drew them constantly. I've always loved drawing people more than any other subject. A lot of practice, still go out and sketch from LIFE and from imagination (I go to coffee shops and sketch with friends or alone). There is a great book, "The Creative Habit" by Twyla Tharp about how to get yourself into that "artists" zone quicker. I have a specific coffee shop that I love, and I do my best work there.

Question: What are some of your most memorable drawings?

Answer: not sure? I do know that my newer style came from a class I took "abstract portraiture" that forced me to break away from realism, so some of that is influential, and memorable. My early work of Duran Duran is still a great memory for me. My self portraits are also memorable, and some of my portraits from school. I'm also exploring abstract drawings recently, they are very new for me. I think the most memorable are Life drawings that are longer poses, and look amazing when you get it just right. I do have most of my "big eye" art original sketches, and I often like the sketch more than the final painting. I think I just "tap" into it more easily than painting still.

Question: What do you wish to gain with your artwork?

Answer: The Meaning of life - for me. Truly. I hope, someday to do it full time - painting, but it's a very difficult living for me. Hard to imagine. Maybe in retirement?

I gain a great deal of self worth from my art. It's a shame it has to come from that, but we are all a little short on self worth sometimes.

My art gave me worth in the eyes of OTHERS… which made it easy to love, and accept my art as a part of me. I gave up career, family, marriage, to pursue my art. I don't regret it. I do want to GROW more with my art, but I know that will come in time.

Question: Where can people see your artwork?

Answer: my Facebook (suzy goodwin) my websites, my house (too much).
Sometimes shows in Sacramento.
www.z-imagination.com
www.geekgirlsatheart.com

Question: How can people contact you?

Answer: oi, uhm… come see me on Tuesday nights at the Sacramento Fine Art Center 6pm - 9pm, I am usually there painting.
my FACEBOOK is the BEST option. look me up by Suzy Goodwin - Sacramento. Z-imagination might work too?
don't call… I don't answer, I hate phones. You can email me at suzygoodwin@netzero.net - give me time to respond, I'm not a fan of
email or phones. I prefer in person over technology. Come see me out at a show or event, I'm at my best.

Question: What inspires you to do your artwork?

Answer: Inspiration comes from very unexpected places sometimes. I've been inspired recently by a new friend in my life. I'm usually inspired by my own ideas, images I see, or stories, sometimes movies, books, art, tv? but most of my stuff comes from within me, maybe while I'm sketching? My own new interests.

Question: Does music help you to draw?

Answer: I rarely live without music, but I am very careful about music when I sketch or paint. it depends on my mood. I don't like the distraction when I'm truly interested in getting work done. When I'm just experimenting or playing around… then I use music. I always play music when on the computer doing graphic design stuff.

Question: What is your spirituality?

Answer: wow… how much time do you have? I consider myself an "extreme agnostic." I am very spiritual. I believe in the UNIVERSE, I believe in things we don't understand. I believe that we are so far removed from "Creation" that we truly cannot understand it. Agnost comes from Greek, meaning "Not to Know" - I believe we cannot know what creation is. The universe is about energy and light and matter and dark matter and things we just don't have any real experience or understanding of.

It shouldn't matter what your beliefs are, except to you… I do like the Buddhist's idea of "do no harm" and I try to follow it as best I can.

Question: Thank you for this wonderful interview. Now to some fun questions. If you had 6 dinner guests, 3 historical, 3 fictional, who would they be?

Answer: I would love to meet Einstein, Van Gogh and Leonardo Da Vinci for historical.

Fictional? my sole mate! that would be awesome. Dracula maybe? and Jesus.

Question: If you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 things would you bring with you to survive?

Answer: toothbrush (tooth fetish), a really good knife with tools, and rope.

Question: Now to end this interview. Do you have any words of wisdom for your readers?

Answer: Live in the Now as often as you possibly can. Don't judge others, and don't let the judgement of others sway you or hurt you.
Easier said than done. Carpe Diem, live your life to it's fullest and live your OWN life. There is no right or wrong to living life, so make your own mistakes. Fight your fears, don't let them stop you or derail you, and…try to Do no harm.
