A Night at the Bohemian Ball
By Paul Dale Roberts

Something new has arrived in Sacramento. It’s called the Bohemian Ball. But, before I talk about the Bohemian Ball, let me enjoy my flashback. Read on.

I remember back in 1974 when I used to walk the streets of Paris, France and I would stop at a few of the Bohemian cafes. Bohemianism is the practice of an unconventional lifestyle. You would often find yourself in the company of like-minded people. Those type of people would be involved in music, artistic or literary pursuits. Bohemians would also be known as wanderers, adventurers and vagabonds.
What I enjoyed about these Bohemian cafes, I would be in a social setting with artists, writers, journalists, musicians and actors. My adventures in Paris will never be forgotten.
Now let me stop flashbacking to Paris and let’s get to Sacramento in the present day.
Before I arrived at the Bohemian Ball, three girls wearing their daisy duke shorts holding each other waists and dancing in alignment were giggling and singing ‘Hot, Hot, Hot by Arrow. That got me in the mood for partying tonight. You can hear the song Hot, Hot, Hot by Arrow at this link:

On this night Shannon McCabe will be DJing at this ball and the theme outfits for everyone is that they can be dressed as goddesses, fairies, elves, renaissance, gypsies, etc. Arriving to this party with me were Chantal Apodaca dressed up as the Egyptian goddess Isis and Silkia Aponte as the Earthly goddess Gaia. What was I dressed up as, you ask? My one and only other persona…the Demon Warrior. Familiar faces like Staci Butler and her husband Scot Shepherd walked in – decked out renaissance style. Some others were fashionably mardi gras with their feathered masks and festive costumes. Rosa Del Fuego dazzled the audience with her belly dancing. If you are ever in need of a belly dancer, you can reach her at: rosadancer@live.com

Walking around photographing all of the guests was Marie Young – Professional Photographer. You can see some of her work at www.marieyoungphotography.com

The lovely Natalya Wahba explained to me that she has brought the Bohemian Ball concept to Sacramento, because she is an artist and she proudly showed me the incredible artwork displayed throughout the walls of this establishment that is known as Café American. She wants to promote another Bohemian Ball that will give homage to the fall harvest. She was an incredible event host as she walked around serving caviar on crackers and various varieties of fish wraps.

As soon as you walk through the door, a gorgeous blonde named Chelsea Forbes is working the door and she is also a cocktail waitress. With her smile, it set you in the mood for what was in store next at this delightful event. In one room was a band playing some of your newer tunes. In the other room, Shannon is pounding out the beats as she does what she knows well…DJing.

There was a burlesque show that the men found entertaining. On this night you were able to break into dance with rhythmatic European techno, music with a gypsy touch and a blend of some latest hits.

All in all this is a fun place to be at, especially if you are a people watcher. There were many interesting costumes to make your head turn. Natalya brought an international flavor to Old Sacramento. Thank you Natalya.
